Getting set up

How do I install my eSIM?

Follow the install guide for iPhone, Samsung Galaxy or Google Pixel. It takes about five minutes on wi-fi.

When should I install it?

The day before you fly, at home on wi-fi. Your plan doesn't start until you arrive and connect, so installing early is safe.

Do I need wi-fi to install?

Yes. Your phone downloads the eSIM over the internet, so you need wi-fi or your own mobile data while you install.

Can I install it on the plane or at the airport?

You can if you have wi-fi, but it's easier at home where you have time and a second screen for the QR code.

How do I switch it on when I land?

Turn on the Tetherd line, set mobile data to Tetherd, and turn on data roaming for Tetherd. The install guide has the exact steps for your phone.

Something's not working

I've landed but there's no data.

Try these in order:

  • Check the Tetherd line is turned on.
  • Check mobile data is set to Tetherd.
  • Turn on data roaming for the Tetherd line.
  • Turn flight mode on, wait 10 seconds, then turn it off.
  • Restart your phone.

Still nothing? Email us with your phone model and where you are, and we'll sort it out.

It says "No service" or keeps searching.

Give it a few minutes after landing: the first connection can take a while. If it doesn't connect, turn off automatic network selection and pick one of the networks listed on your destination's page.

The QR code says it's invalid or already used.

Each QR code installs once. If you've already installed it, the eSIM is on your phone: look for it in your mobile settings. If it was never installed, email us.

My phone asks for an APN.

Most phones set this up on their own. If yours asks, the APN is in your Tetherd email. Type it in under the Tetherd line's mobile data settings.

Hotspot isn't working.

Check mobile data is set to Tetherd, not your own SIM, then turn hotspot off and on again. Restarting your phone usually fixes it.

It's slow.

Speeds depend on local signal, so they drop indoors, in crowds and in remote areas. Try moving, or pick a different network manually. On iPhone, Low Data Mode also slows things down.

Data and plans

How much data do I need?
How you use your phoneFor exampleRoughly
Maps, messages and emailLight use, mostly on hotel wi-fi150MB a day
Plus socials and photosInstagram, TikTok, sharing photos300 to 500MB a day
Plus video calls and streamingFaceTime, YouTube, music1GB or more a day
Sharing with a laptopWork, uploads, updates2GB or more a day

Multiply by the days you'll be away. If you're unsure, go one size up: running out mid-trip is more annoying than leftover data.

What happens when my data runs out?

On most plans your data slows right down (enough for messages, not much else), and on the smallest plans it stops. Either way there's never a surprise bill. Buy another plan and install it, and you're back online at full speed in minutes.

Can I top up?

Not yet. For now, buy another plan for the same destination. We're looking at top-ups for later.

Can I use one plan in more than one country?

Only the Europe plan, which covers 35 countries. Every other plan works in its own destination only.

Does it work on a cruise?

Only in port or near the coast, where it can reach a land network. Out at sea, ships use their own satellite networks, which Tetherd doesn't cover.

Can I keep the eSIM for my next trip?

Each plan is for one destination and one trip. When it ends, you can delete the eSIM and buy a new one next time.

Calls and texts

Can I make calls and send texts?

Tetherd is data only, so there's no phone number. Calls and messages work over data in apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Messenger, Viber and Signal.

Will I still get texts and calls to my own number?

Yes, if your carrier allows roaming. Keep your own SIM switched on (with its data roaming off) and texts such as bank codes still arrive. Your carrier may charge for calls and some texts overseas, so check with them before you go.

How do I avoid roaming charges from my carrier?

Turn off data roaming on your own SIM and set mobile data to Tetherd. On iPhone, also turn off Allow Mobile Data Switching.

Will WhatsApp and iMessage keep my number?

Yes. WhatsApp, iMessage and FaceTime stay linked to your own number, even while they run on Tetherd data.

Orders and refunds

How do I get my eSIM?

By email, usually within minutes of paying. It has your QR code, the codes to type in by hand, and the install steps.

My email hasn't arrived.

Check your spam or junk folder first. If it's not there after 30 minutes, email us with the email address you used.

Can I buy for someone else?

Yes. Forward the email to them. Each eSIM installs on one phone, so a family of four needs four.

Can I get a refund?

If you haven't installed it, yes, for any reason. If it's installed and we can't get it working, you'll get a new eSIM or a refund. Read the refund policy.

How far ahead can I buy?

Up to six months before your trip. The plan's days don't start until you arrive and connect.

Be first on board.

Tetherd opens soon. Leave your email and we'll send you one message when you can buy.

We'll only email you about Tetherd opening, and we never share your address. Privacy
