Two quick checks: your phone needs to support eSIM, and it needs to be unlocked.
1
Does it support eSIM?
An eSIM is a SIM built into your phone. Most phones from the last few years have one.
iPhoneGo to Settings › General › About and scroll down. If you see EID, your iPhone supports eSIM.
AndroidOpen the Phone app and dial *#06#. If an EID number shows, your phone supports eSIM.
2
Is it unlocked?
A locked phone only works with the carrier that sold it, so it can't add a travel eSIM.
iPhoneGo to Settings › General › About. Next to Carrier Lock, it should say No SIM restrictions.
AndroidPhones bought outright are usually unlocked. If you got it on a plan, ask your carrier. They can tell you, and unlock it if it isn't.
Phones that support eSIM
The EID check above is the surest test. This list covers the most common phones.
Apple iPhone
iPhone XR, XS and XS Max, and every iPhone since: 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 series, iPhone 16e, and iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation).
Samsung Galaxy
Galaxy S20 and later, every Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip, Galaxy Note20, and some recent A-series phones, such as the A35, A55 and A56.
Google Pixel
Pixel 4 and later, including the a-series (Pixel 4a, 5a, 6a, 7a, 8a and 9a), Pro and Fold models.
Other phones
Many recent Oppo, Xiaomi, Motorola, Sony and Huawei phones support eSIM, but not every model or every country's version does. Use the EID check.
iPads and tablets
Most iPads with mobile data (the Wi-Fi + Cellular models) from 2019 onwards support eSIM, and Tetherd works on them too.
Bought overseas?
iPhones bought in mainland China, and most bought in Hong Kong or Macau, don't support eSIM. Some phones made for other countries leave it out. The EID check tells you for sure.
Phone questions
My phone isn't on the list. Will it work?
It might. Try the EID check at the top of this page. If an EID shows and your phone is unlocked, Tetherd will work.
Can I use Tetherd and my own SIM at the same time?
Yes. Your phone keeps both: your own SIM for calls and texts, and Tetherd for data. You choose which line uses mobile data in Settings.
How many eSIMs can my phone hold?
Most phones can store several eSIMs, and use one or two at a time. You can keep Tetherd installed alongside your own SIM and other eSIMs.
I bought my phone on a plan. Is it locked?
It might be. Ask the carrier that sold it. Most will unlock a phone once it's paid off, sometimes straight away.
What if I buy and my phone doesn't work?
If you haven't installed the eSIM, we'll refund it in full. See the refund policy.
